The great gritstone ridge south of the town is Otley Chevin Forest Park — Otley’s rooftop. From the top at Surprise View, Wharfedale spreads out below in one of Yorkshire’s classic panoramas.
Woodland trails climb past prehistoric carved rocks to the open summit, where a wooden cross is raised each Easter — a tradition the whole town watches for. On a clear day you can see for thirty miles.
