Middleton Park is south Leeds’ giant: 630 acres — nearly a square mile — of which some 200 acres are ancient woodland, threaded with paths that have been walked for centuries.

There is a lake, a visitor centre and rose garden, and deep history underfoot: medieval fishponds from the bishops’ palace and the remains of the collieries whose coal the Middleton Railway (its own post in our Museums list) was built to carry. The John Charles Centre for Sport stands at the park’s edge.
