Kirkgate Market is Leeds in a building: one of the largest indoor markets in Europe, trading on this site since 1857, with the magnificent 1904 hall — dragons, ironwork and all — at its heart.

Hundreds of stalls cover everything from butchers and fishmongers to fabrics and phone cases, and the street-food stalls of Market Kitchen fill the newer hall. This is also where Michael Marks opened his Penny Bazaar in 1884 (see our M&S Archive post). Open Monday to Saturday.
