Leeds Minster: the cross, the cloth and 180 years of Victorian ambition

Leeds Minster — St Peter-at-Leeds — is the city’s parish church grown grand: rebuilt in 1837–41 as one of the largest new churches of its age, on a site of worship reaching back to the seventh century.

Inside stands the reassembled Leeds Cross, the tenth-century carved cross found in pieces in the old church tower in 1838 (the same cross our History page sets straight). The Minster — given that title in 2012 — runs lunchtime concerts and is open to visitors most days.
