RSPB St Aidan’s: the coal mine that became a wetland

On the edge of Garforth, St Aidan’s is one of the great second acts of the Leeds landscape: a vast opencast coal mine, worked until 2002, reborn as a 400-hectare RSPB nature park of lakes, reedbeds and meadows.

Paths and cycleways loop the wetlands — families cycle here from Leeds along the Linesway — and the birdlife is serious: black-necked grebes breed here, bitterns boom in the reeds, and huge winter flocks gather on the main lake. The visitor centre has a café and hire bikes. It is both a reserve and a park in the fullest sense, which is why we file it under both.
