Britain’s national museum of arms and armour lives in Leeds. The Royal Armouries brought its main collection north in 1996 to a purpose-built home on Leeds Dock, and entry is free.

Five galleries run from tournament armour and the weapons of the Tower of London to hunting, warfare and an Oriental gallery — Henry VIII’s horned helmet is the famous face of the place. Demonstrations and combat displays run daily, and the tiltyard outside hosts jousting at bank holidays.
