Founded in 1888, Leeds Art Gallery holds one of the strongest collections of British art outside London — and it is free. Victorian pictures, modern sculpture and changing exhibitions fill a grand Headrow building.

Don’t skip the Tiled Hall: the old library reading room, all marble and Victorian tiles, now a café. Next door, the Henry Moore Institute adds sculpture exhibitions and a research library — Moore himself studied in Leeds.
