Middleton Railway: the world’s oldest working railway

The Middleton Railway has been working since 1758 — older than the steam locomotive, older than railways almost anywhere — and is run today entirely by volunteers.

Trains run from Moor Road station, Hunslet, up to Middleton Park, and the Engine House museum at the station displays the line’s Leeds-built locomotives. Trains run most weekends and on holidays in season; check the timetable before you go.
