Thackray Museum of Medicine: Disease Street and the story of surgery

The Thackray Museum of Medicine stands in the grand old Leeds Union Workhouse beside St James’s Hospital — the building where the city’s poorest once came for help, now telling medicine’s story.

Its recreated Victorian slum street, “Disease Street”, shows the Leeds that public health had to conquer; galleries then run from battlefield surgery to modern operating theatres. Not for the squeamish, and all the better for it.
