Harewood House: Adam, Chippendale and a bird garden

Harewood House, built in the 1760s–70s, is Yorkshire’s great Palladian set piece: Robert Adam interiors, Chippendale furniture, Reynolds and Turner on the walls, and Capability Brown grounds rolling down to the lake.

It is still the Lascelles family home, run by a trust, with exhibitions and a full events calendar. The grounds deserve half the visit in their own right: formal terrace gardens above a Capability Brown landscape of rolling parkland and a serpentine lake, lakeside and woodland walks, and a long-established bird garden famous for its penguins and flamingos. Opening is seasonal — roughly spring to autumn plus a Christmas season — and tickets are the priciest on this list, but so is the art.
