Down a lane off Briggate, the City Varieties (1865) is one of Britain’s oldest surviving music halls — the room where Houdini and Chaplin played, and where the BBC filmed The Good Old Days for thirty years.

It still works hard — comedy, music and the beloved rock ’n’ roll panto — and, like its sister Grand, it opens its doors for tours: 90-minute guided tours cost £18 (a joint Grand + Varieties ticket is £35), booked through Leeds Heritage Theatres.
