At 127 miles, the Leeds & Liverpool Canal is the longest canal in northern England — and its Leeds end is one of the city’s best free walks. From Granary Wharf and Leeds Dock, the towpath runs west past Kirkstall Abbey and Rodley, and on towards Shipley.

Walk it in city-sized pieces: Granary Wharf to Kirkstall is about three miles of locks, mills and herons. The towpath is free for walkers and cyclists; the little yellow water taxis between the Dock and Granary Wharf charge a small fare. Not a museum, park or venue — which is exactly why the canal lives in our Others drawer.
